Can dogs eat onions? And cats?
Toxic in all forms: raw, cooked, powdered, and in leftovers or baby food.
Toxic, and cats are even more sensitive than dogs.
Onions (with the whole allium family: leeks, chives, shallots) damage red blood cells and can cause anemia days after ingestion. Onion powder in soups, broths and seasoning counts too, which is how most accidental exposures happen. Cats are especially sensitive; a small amount of onion-seasoned food can be enough to harm them.
Signs to watch for
- Weakness
- Pale gums
- Fast breathing
- Dark urine
- Vomiting
