Can dogs eat avocado? And cats?
The flesh is only mildly risky, but the pit, skin and high fat are real hazards.
Mildly risky. Cats rarely want it; do not offer it deliberately.
Avocado contains persin, which is seriously toxic to birds but only mildly irritating to most dogs and cats. The bigger dangers are the pit (a perfect choking and intestinal-blockage size) and the fruit's high fat content, which can trigger pancreatitis. A stolen bite of flesh is usually fine; a swallowed pit is a vet visit.
Signs to watch for
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Pancreatitis from fatty meals
- Choking or blockage from the pit
