Plain peanut butter is a beloved dog treat and pill vehicle, and in small amounts it is fine. The critical check is the ingredient list: a growing number of brands use xylitol, which is extremely toxic to dogs. It is also calorie-dense, so keep it to a lick, not a spoonful, especially for small or overweight pets.
Signs to watch for
- If it contains xylitol: weakness, collapse, seizures
- Otherwise: stomach upset from excess fat
