Can dogs eat almonds? And cats?
Not truly toxic, but they upset stomachs, choke small dogs, and are often salted.
Skip them: hard, fatty, and easy for a cat to choke on.
Almonds are not toxic like macadamias, but they earn their caution label: dogs do not chew them well, so they choke or block; the fat content upsets stomachs and can trigger pancreatitis in sensitive dogs; and flavored varieties add salt and seasonings. Almond butter in small xylitol-free amounts is the safer form.
Signs to watch for
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Choking or esophageal blockage in small pets
