Is mistletoe toxic to dogs or cats?
Small nibbles: GI upset. Large amounts or berries: call the vet.
The same graded risk applies to cats.
American mistletoe usually causes stomach upset in small exposures, but larger ingestions, especially of berries, can affect heart rate and blood pressure. Hang it where falling leaves and berries cannot be scavenged. European mistletoe is more toxic than the American kind.
Signs to watch for
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Low heart rate and pressure with large amounts
